This textile showcases the renowned Nishijinori weaving technique known as Hikihaku, which uses weft threads that are made by finely cutting the Haku into threads. Haku is Washi paper embellished with materials such as lacquer, gold, or silver. The weft threads in this piece are made from black lacquered Washi paper adorned with silver leaf powder. The process of making this thread involves coating the Washi paper with black lacquer and then sprinkling it with powder made from silver leaf that has been heat treated to change its color. This creates a haze-like effect before it is then crafted into thread. This pattern, produced by sprinkled gold or silver leaf, was commonly seen in Washi paper used for calligraphy in the 10th century.
