This textile showcases the renowned Nishijinori weaving technique known as Hikihaku, which uses weft threads that are made by finely cutting the Haku into threads. Haku is Washi paper embellished with materials such as lacquer, gold, or silver. The Haku in this piece is crafted by affixing several types of sulfurated silver leaf, known as Yakihaku, onto black lacquer-coated Washi paper in a checkered pattern, accentuating the different tones of the leaf. The checkered motif creates a sense of traditional Japanese esthetic.
