This textile is known as Sukui, a weaving technique in which handmade silk thread is used. The silk threads are crafted by hand pulling and thinning silk wadding sheets, which are made by stretching out silkworm cocoons, before twisting them into threads. This process results in an uneven thickness in the threads, producing a rustic texture. Unlike conventional textiles in which the weft and warp threads are woven perpendicularly, the weft threads in this piece are piled in an arc-like form to embody the curvature of waves. This results in a translucent quality that also showcases a distinctive handwoven finish.
