This piece captures the scene of raging waves rolling forward by creating a textured, inconsistent surface achieved through the contrast of Jacquard weaving and hand-tufting techniques. The wave crests are portrayed as voluminous, with a bold, shimmering, shaggy finish, using novelty yarn made by twisting together different kinds of threads, including Hakuito [a thread made from finely cut Washi paper embellished with materials such as lacquer, gold, or silver]. As the waves retreat, they gradually blend into the base fabric.
