Multi-colored, three-dimensional fabric of the highest quality
This is Jacquard fabric with a classic, yet universal and refined design, made by weaving carefully selected materials, such as genuine gold leaf and gold thread, into the base silk fabric. It is highly colorful and characterized by the use of multi-colored threads of different thicknesses that have been woven to give the fabric a three-dimensional appearance. This is a technique used by our company to make “obi (sashes for kimonos)” of the highest grade. This was an original fabric made by our company during the Meiji Period, when the son of the company founder, Jimbei Kawashima II, made improvements to the “karaori,” worn as part of the costume in the traditional Japanese performing art of Noh, to make it easier to use as an “obi.”
The Jacquard machine was brought to Japan from France in 1873, and the machine was made in Japan for the first time in 1877. This led to a dramatic improvement in the productivity and designs of Nishijin textiles. This is fabric of the highest grade at our company, made by Jacquard machines, for use in “obi.”
