Gorgeous fabric with gold leaf paper wefts woven into it
This fabric, unique to Japan, is made using a weaving technique found nowhere else in the world. Gold or platinum leaf (gold or platinum foil that is ten-thousandth of 1 to 2 mm in thickness) is pasted onto “washi” paper, and cut into thin, flat strips, which are used as wefts to make gorgeous fabric.
“Saga nishiki” was first made in the region known today as Saga Prefecture (of Japan). It is said to have been invented by the wife of Nabeshima, who ruled the entire Saga Prefecture area in the 17th century, when she fell ill and got the idea from staring at the geometric patterns on the ceiling. Since then, this “Saga nishiki” has been made to symbolize feminine modesty. It grew in popularity, but at the time, it was made on small looms, preventing the making of long or large pieces of fabric.
Today, the techniques for producing gold or platinum leaf paper wefts have improved, allowing them to be produced in lengths of up to several dozen meters, and enabling the fabric to be used in “obi” sashes.
“Saga nishiki” is regarded as being synonymous with high-quality “obi” for their unique texture. At our company, we use carefully selected materials, such as gold and platinum leaf, with their gorgeous, everlasting shine, in weaving our “Saga nishiki” with refined elegance. We have won high appraisal for our “obi,” which are ideal for wearing on formal occasions.
